About the Northern Trust Intern Program:
The Northern Trust Intern Program is a highly competitive ten-week summer program focused on hiring rising senior level undergraduate students. The program provides an opportunity to work in a fast paced and inclusive culture, while utilizing individual skills and abilities to make a positive impact on the company. While interns work directly with their team on day-to-day tasks, they also benefit from having a mentor, participating in professional development activities, and attending senior management informational presentations. Team placements are based on the candidate’s experience, skill set and interest.
About Corporate Groups:
Corporate Groups support the entire organization, providing human resources, risk management, financial management and legal, audit, and facilities services. Included in this area is Corporate Finance, which is responsible for the integrity of Northern Trust’s accounting and financial infrastructure and for managing the Corporation’s financial position.
Examples of prior responsibilities (note: work varies by team placement):
Audit: apply risk assessment process to assess and validate effectiveness of business unit controls;
Finance: monthly/quarterly financial reporting and analysis for assigned segments, looking for trends and anomalies, explaining variances to management; and
Human Resources: support recruitment activities and perform data analysis and research.
Examples of learning objectives (vary by team placement, but may include the following):
Learn the role of internal audit in the highly regulated financial services industry;
Exposure to reporting and analysis in support of monthly financial statement analysis, the forecasting and budgeting process, and assisting with presentations for business unit leadership; and
Learn about various talent programs, recruiting, and overall Human Resources.
Our intern program includes many activities to further your professional development and provide you with networking opportunities. Your internship experience will include:
Meaningful work assignments to assist with real-world application of learned concepts;
An appointed mentor to provide guidance and an understanding of Northern Trust culture;
Learning and development opportunities, including business related workshops and weekly “Lunch & Learn” sessions;
Professional and social networking opportunities with various levels of Northern Trust employees, including access to senior leaders across the business;
Group presentation to senior managers on an assigned business topic to enhance research and public speaking skills;
Goal setting and job expectations discussion along with a performance evaluation; and
Community service team-building event (past events have included packing food at non-profit food distribution center, beautification of a community garden, and building literacy kits for children).

Interns possess the following attributes (varies by role):
Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree from a four year-college or university with a Finance, Accounting or related major;
Strong understanding and interest in accounting principles and reading financial statements;
Advanced level of competency with Microsoft Office Suite of products;
Analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills;
Adaptability and ability to learn quickly in high-pressure environments;
Leadership, teamwork and client servicing ability;
An understanding of diversity and value of inclusion; and
Knowledge and interest in Northern Trust and the financial services industry.
